Imagine stepping back in time to 1935. The Galería de Arte Mexicano GAM emerges as a haven for Mexican art. Carolina Amor founded it then. It was the first gallery in Mexico dedicated solely to Mexican artists.

Inés Amor, Carolina’s sister, took the reins in 1936. She directed the GAM for decades. Her vision shaped the gallery’s identity. The gallery building itself was a first. Andrés Casillas de Alba designed it. It was his first building in Mexico.

Public and private institutions collect art from the GAM. The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art are among them.

The Galería de Arte Mexicano GAM provided a space for artists. They were not only from the Mexican School of Painting. The gallery also embraced other artistic movements. Surrealists found a home here. Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo were among them. They fled war in Europe and found refuge in Mexico.

Today the Galería de Arte Mexicano GAM continues to evolve. It exhibits contemporary artists. Flor Garduño and Carlos García Noriega are among them.

The GAM’s archives are a treasure trove. They contain letters, photographs, and catalogs. These records offer insights into Mexican art history. Researchers explore Mexican art from the 20th century and beyond.
