The Gerda-Taro-Schule is named after Gerda Taro. She was a German photographer. She documented war crimes. She worked for international newspapers during the Spanish Civil War. The Tarostraße in Leipzig is also named after her.
This school is located at Telemannstraße 9. That is in the Südvorstadt district. The school is near the Musikviertel. The Gerda-Taro-Schule started as part of the Friedrich-Schiller-Schule. It was in a former primary school building. The first classes were taught there in 2015. In 2017, the school moved to its current building on Telemannstraße. The first students graduated in 2023.
Today the Gerda-Taro-Schule has about 1350 students. Around 120 teachers work here. The school focuses on media and computer science. It is one of three M.I.T. Gymnasiums in Saxony. Democracy education is another important focus.
