Perhaps you have noticed this impressive building before. It is the 1. épület. This is no ordinary building. It is part of Budapest’s rich tapestry of history and modern life.
The 1. épület stands as a testament to Budapest’s dynamic spirit. It is a blend of architectural styles and historical significance. Originally designed by Hungarian architect Ignác Alpár, Váci 1 was constructed between 1911 and 1915. Alpár was a renowned architect. He left an indelible mark on Budapest’s cityscape.
For over a century, 1. épület has served many purposes. It first housed the headquarters of the Hungarian Bank. Stores occupied the ground floor. Residences were on the top level. From 1990 to 2005, it even hosted the Budapest Stock Exchange.
But as the years passed, much of the building stood empty. It waited for a rebirth. This renaissance arrived in 2015. Horizon Development acquired 1. épület. Their vision was to restore and redevelop it into a mixed-use space. It would house retail and office units as well as restaurants and bars.
The developers embarked on an authentic restoration. Historic spaces and architectural elements were carefully preserved. The lead glass windows by Miksa Róth are particularly noteworthy. Róth was a famous art deco glass artist. Columns, tympanums, stone reliefs and mosaics were also restored. Golden and marble surfaces now gleam. Lighting fixtures add to its grandeur.
In 2016, 1. épület opened its doors once again. It now elegantly combines heritage with modern spaces. One of the largest H&M flagship stores in the world found its home here.
Today, 1. épület is home to a variety of companies. These include Hard Rock Café and Szamos Gourmet Palace. The building also houses DVM group and Horizon Development. Mastercard and Play’n GO also call it home. Cushman and Wakefield have offices here. Even the innovation center of OTP LAB and the organizer of Hungarian Formula 1 races, Ostermann, are within its walls.
For panoramic views, ascend to the St. Andrea Wine & Skybar on the 6th floor. From there, Vörösmarty Square and Fashion Street unfold below. The Parliament Building, Váci Street, and the Budapest Eye shimmer in the distance. The Danube River and Buda Castle complete the breathtaking panorama.
