“Did you know that this station has undergone a name change?” We are standing in front of Shanghai Songjiang Station. Today, let’s delve into the story of this vital transportation hub in Shanghai’s Songjiang District.

Shanghai Songjiang Station is more than just a railway station. It is a testament to Shanghai’s rapid development and expansion. This station plays a crucial role in connecting Songjiang District to the wider Shanghai area and beyond.

Originally known as Songjiang South railway station, it was renamed Shanghai Songjiang railway station on May 22, 2024. This name change reflects its growing importance within the city’s railway network. The station’s history dates back to October 26, 2010 when it first opened.

Shanghai Songjiang Station has seen significant expansion. The Shanghai-Suzhou-Huzhou High-speed Railway construction led to its growth. It expanded from 2 platforms and 4 tracks to an impressive 9 platforms and 23 tracks. This makes it the third-largest high-speed railway station in Shanghai. Only Shanghai Hongqiao and the under-construction Shanghai East railway stations are bigger.

The scale of the Shanghai Songjiang Station building is impressive. It covers approximately 60,000 square meters. It is predicted that the station will handle over 20 million passengers annually.

The Shanghai-Kunming railway section was connected to the new line passing through this station on December 13, 2024. On December 26, 2024, the northern part of the station began passenger services. This was with the opening of the Shanghai-Suzhou-Huzhou High-Speed Railway.

After a train operation schedule adjustment in early 2025, the station handles a significant volume of traffic. It manages 113 high-speed train services and 77 ordinary train services daily.

Shanghai Songjiang Station serves several important railway lines. These include the Shanghai-Suzhou-Huzhou high-speed railway. It also connects to the Shanghai-Kunming high-speed railway and the Shanghai-Kunming railway.

Planned connections will further enhance its importance. The East-West connection line and the Jiaqingsongjin line are in the works. Also, the Shanghai Metro is planned to serve the station.

So, as you board your train or simply pass through, remember the story of Shanghai Songjiang Station. From its humble beginnings as Songjiang South railway station to its current status as a major transportation hub, it embodies Shanghai’s dynamic spirit and continuous growth. It stands as a gateway. It connects Songjiang to the region.
