Picture this a grand lake shimmering under the Fukuoka sun. This is Ohori Park a haven of beauty and history. Ohori Park wasn’t always a park. Centuries ago this very spot served as a vital moat protecting Fukuoka Castle the home of the powerful Kuroda clan. The land itself was a gift from Tokugawa Ieyasu a reward for the Kuroda’s loyalty during the Battle of Sekigahara. Imagine the strategic importance of this large moat Ohori meaning ‘great moat’ in Japanese. The marshland called Kusagae was transformed. Kuroda Nagamasa the clan lord oversaw its creation in 1601.

Ohori Park as we see it today is a masterpiece of design. Opened in 1929 it was inspired by the West Lake in Hangzhou China. Three elegant islands grace the lake connected by graceful bridges. These islands are particularly beautiful at night illuminated in dramatic colors. They’re a favorite spot for romantic couples.

The park isn’t just for quiet contemplation. It’s a popular spot for runners especially during the Fukuoka Marathon training season in October and November. You can even rent swan-shaped paddle boats for a leisurely tour of the lake. Cafes both inside and outside the park offer respite and refreshment.

Ohori Park’s charm extends beyond its serene beauty. The Fukuoka Art Museum stands proudly near its edge. Inside you can admire masterpieces by Dali and Miro as well as Buddhist statues dating back to the 11th century. Adjacent is a traditional Japanese garden a peaceful retreat featuring dry landscapes and tea houses. A small fee grants access to this gem. Ohori Park is a place where history art and natural beauty intertwine. It’s more than just a park it’s a journey through time and culture a true treasure of Fukuoka.
