“A mosque shaped like a triangle?” you might ask, your eyebrows furrowing in curiosity. Right here in the bustling heart of Jakarta, stands Masjid Jami Darussalam, affectionately nicknamed the “Masjid Segitiga,” or Triangle Mosque. Masjid Jami Darussalam’s unique design immediately sets it apart from the traditional domed mosques we often picture. Masjid Jami Darussalam was designed by none other than Ridwan Kamil, a prominent Indonesian architect and former mayor of Bandung. Originally, this very spot was occupied by another mosque, also called Darussalam, situated on waqf land. When the land was slated for the Putragaya Wahana development project, an agreement was reached to relocate and rebuild the mosque. Thus, Masjid Jami Darussalam was reborn just 200 meters from its original location. The striking triangular design wasn’t immediately embraced by everyone. Some residents initially resisted, comparing the shape to a church rather than a traditional mosque. It took some convincing, emphasizing Kamil’s reputation as a leading architect, to reassure the community. The beautiful calligraphy adorning the walls, proclaiming the oneness of God (la illaha illallah), played a significant role in easing concerns and fostering acceptance. Masjid Jami Darussalam officially opened its doors on June 25, 2015, during the holy month of Ramadan. The main prayer hall, situated on the second floor, is bathed in natural light during the day. At night, soft electric lights illuminate the space, highlighting the intricate calligraphy that graces the triangular walls. Kamil’s intention behind the unconventional design was to challenge conventional thinking. He wanted to break free from the notion that Indonesian mosques must adhere to Middle Eastern architectural styles, with their characteristic domes designed to combat intense heat. Instead, he drew inspiration from the familiar triangular roofs of Indonesian homes. Today, Masjid Jami Darussalam serves as a vibrant center for the community. Regular Islamic activities, such as weekly women’s study groups and monthly dawn prayers, fill its unique space. During Ramadan, the mosque’s activities intensify, with regular sermons following midday prayers. The story of Masjid Jami Darussalam is a testament to the power of innovative design and community engagement. It reminds us that sacred spaces can evolve while remaining true to their spiritual purpose.
