“A mosque unlike any other,” whispered a visitor, gazing at Masjid Jami’ Darus Salam. Masjid Jami’ Darus Salam stands as a testament to architectural innovation. Many Indonesians remarked that its unique, triangular form resembled a church, a far cry from the traditional domed mosque. Ridwan Kamil, the renowned Indonesian architect, envisioned Masjid Jami’ Darus Salam. He believed a dome wasn’t suitable for Jakarta’s tropical climate. He saw the mosque as a place for communal worship, its form unbound by tradition. Kamil’s vision was initially met with resistance. The mosque’s triangular design, a departure from the familiar dome, was initially rejected by the mosque’s administrators. Kamil argued that the dome wasn’t appropriate for the tropical climate. He explained his design philosophy, emphasizing the beautiful calligraphy of “Lailaahaillallah” adorning the walls. Eventually, his persistence and vision won over the skeptics. Masjid Jami’ Darus Salam’s main prayer hall resides on the second floor. The interior features a western-facing pulpit, triangular walls adorned with calligraphy, and ample natural light. At night, electric lights illuminate the space without glare. Originally situated on Jalan Kotabumi, near Plaza UOB, Masjid Jami’ Darus Salam was relocated to Jalan Kota Bumi Ujung. The relocation was due to encroaching development, but the mosque found a new, larger home. To fund its operations, Masjid Jami’ Darus Salam employs a system of productive waqf. Rentable spaces and a coffee shop generate income, supplemented by donations from nearby businesses. During Ramadan, the mosque provides free meals for breaking the fast. The mosque primarily serves those working in the vicinity, with a smaller percentage of local residents. Masjid Jami’ Darus Salam stands not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of architectural innovation and community spirit.
