Founded in 1851 Northwestern University stands proudly. It’s the oldest chartered university in Illinois. Nine Chicago businessmen Methodist leaders and attorneys met. They envisioned a university serving the Northwest Territory. Despite their Methodist faith they established a non-sectarian institution.

John Evans a prominent figure purchased land along Lake Michigan. This land became Evanston the university’s home. Old College the first building opened in 1855. To fund construction Northwestern sold perpetual scholarships. These scholarships guaranteed free tuition for the purchaser and their heirs. Northwestern’s commitment to education extended to women. The university admitted its first female students in 1869.

Northwestern’s impact extends beyond academics. The university fielded its first football team in 1882. It became a founding member of the Big Ten Conference. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries Northwestern affiliated with professional schools in Chicago. These included law medicine and dentistry. President Henry Wade Rogers integrated these schools. He transformed Northwestern into a modern research university.

The early 20th century saw significant growth. Walter Dill Scott’s presidency from 1920 to 1939 spurred construction. A new integrated campus in downtown Chicago was built. James Gamble Rogers designed the buildings in a Collegiate Gothic style. The Kellogg School of Management was established. New buildings rose on the Evanston campus including Dyche Stadium now Ryan Field and Deering Library.

World War II significantly impacted Northwestern. The university trained nearly 50000 military personnel. Franklyn B Snyder led during this period. Post-war the G I Bill fueled a surge in enrollment. This led to expansion on both campuses. Melville J Herskovits a prominent anthropologist established the Program of African Studies. A unique program at the time.

J Roscoe Miller’s presidency saw continued expansion. The Lakefill project added land to the Evanston campus. New academic programs were developed. The post-war era brought student activism. Tensions arose between the university and the Evanston community. Issues included student protests property taxes and alcohol restrictions. These tensions were gradually resolved over time.

Northwestern’s legacy is one of academic excellence. Its renowned schools of management engineering and communication are among the best. The university attracts significant research funding.
