“Imagine, if you will, stepping back to 1760. That’s when the story of Masjid An-Nawier begins right here in Pekojan Jakarta.” This mosque stands as a testament to Arab civilization in Jakarta. Its majestic architecture has stood the test of time in this densely populated area of West Jakarta.

Masjid An-Nawier was built by Sayid Abdullah bin Huseim Alaydrius. He was a Yemeni who came from Hadramaut. Some say that he was a descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The mosque has seen many changes with renovations and maintenance over the years. The most significant physical change occurred in the 1800s. Then in 1850 Commander Dahlan from Banten expanded the mosque. In 1897 more land was donated for further expansion.

Today Masjid An-Nawier has a unique L-shaped prayer building. Its land area is about 2000 square meters. The building itself covers 1500 square meters. It can accommodate 1000 pilgrims. There are three entrances on the north south and eastern sides. Inside you will find 33 poles.

A special feature of Masjid An-Nawier is its pulpit. The Sultan of Pontianak donated it in 1871. Also the mosque tower resembles a lighthouse.

Masjid An-Nawier is more than just a building. It represents a vibrant history and a symbol of cultural heritage. As you stand here take a moment to appreciate the layers of history that have shaped this remarkable place. It is a legacy that connects us to the past while inspiring future generations. The story of Masjid An-Nawier is a story of community faith and enduring tradition.
