Can you imagine being a pupil at the Old Royal High School in the 19th century? This iconic building, standing proudly on Calton Hill, served as a place of learning for generations of Edinburgh’s youth. Designed by Thomas Hamilton, the Old Royal High School is a true masterpiece of the Greek Revival style. Its grandeur and elegance, reminiscent of ancient Greek temples, make it one of Edinburgh’s most awe-inspiring landmarks.

The Old Royal High School is not just a beautiful building; it has played a pivotal role in Scottish history. It was even considered as a potential home for the Scottish Parliament in the 1970s. Sadly, that dream never came to fruition. However, the building has hosted important meetings and gatherings, including those of the Scottish Grand Committee, a House of Commons body.

The Old Royal High School has witnessed many changes throughout its long history. It served as a school for over 140 years until 1968 when the Royal High School relocated to Barnton. The building went through a period of uncertainty until it was acquired by Edinburgh City Council in 1994.

The Old Royal High School has seen countless proposals for its future use, including serving as a Scottish National Photography Centre or a Scottish Central Bank. And in 2015, the council initiated a project to lease the building for a luxury hotel. But in 2021, the lease agreement was cancelled, leaving its future use uncertain.

Looking at the Old Royal High School now, it is hard to deny its cultural significance. It represents a vital chapter in the history of Edinburgh and Scotland. It has welcomed countless students and hosted numerous events that have shaped our city’s identity. Even though its future remains uncertain, its presence on Calton Hill evokes sentiments of pride and respect for this architectural gem and the stories it has witnessed over time.
