Butterfly Garden

A kaleidoscope of wings. This is the first thought that comes to mind at the Budapest Zoo’s Butterfly Garden. Hundreds of butterflies flutter around you. They create a living rainbow against the backdrop of lush tropical foliage. The Butterfly Garden, or Lepkekert as it’s known in Hungarian, is a seasonal exhibit. It bursts with life during the summer and early autumn months. The garden opened at the end of May this year, showcasing vibrant butterflies from Central and South America. These delicate creatures, though small, hold a captivating allure. They draw visitors into their magical world. The Butterfly Garden has been enchanting guests at the Budapest Zoo since 2000. It found its current home near the Palm House in 2014. Imagine these exotic butterflies arriving as chrysalises, shipped all the way from a butterfly farm in Costa Rica. Upon arrival at the zoo, these precious packages are carefully placed in a special cabinet. If you’re lucky, you might witness the magical moment. A butterfly emerges from its chrysalis, ready to paint the air with its vibrant wings. The latest arrivals boast 18 different species. Four of these haven’t been seen in the garden this season. The butterflies thrive in the specially designed enclosure. It provides them with 240 square meters of space. They flit and flutter amongst the exotic plants. These plants include bromeliads, orchids, verbenas, and members of the Rubiaceae family. You can observe the butterflies in their element. They feed on fruit juice, bananas, oranges, and a specially prepared artificial nectar. The Butterfly Garden invites you to immerse yourself in a tropical paradise.
