Envisioning its past, the Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Kultus / Sächsisches Staatsministerium der Finanzen stands before us. This building houses two vital state ministries. Both ministries were founded in 1990. They share a common space within Dresden’s government district.

The Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Kultus / Sächsisches Staatsministerium der Finanzen is near Carolaplatz. It is on the southern side of Innere Neustadt. The building is close to the Elbe River and the Golden Rider.

The edifice was initially built for the Royal Saxon Finance Ministry. It was constructed in the late 19th century. Otto Wanckel, a student of Semper, designed the sandstone structure. Construction occurred from 1894 to 1897. The style reflects the Neorenaissance period.

During the war, the building suffered damage. After 1945, it was rebuilt and first housed the district authority of the German People’s Police.

Following the political changes of 1989, the building was renovated between 1993 and 1995. The goal was to restore its original appearance. It should once again become the home of the Saxon Finance Minister. Architects worked to revive the ministerial building’s original design. Today, it houses the Sächsisches Staatsministerium der Finanzen and the Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Kultus.

Employees of the Sächsisches Staatsministerium der Finanzen affectionately call it “Our little Semperoper.” This nickname refers to the ceiling paintings in the entrance hall. These paintings evoke the style of Dresden’s Semperoper.

The Sächsisches Staatsministerium der Finanzen is a supreme state authority. It is responsible for financial matters in Saxony. The headquarters are in Dresden. Minister Hartmut Vorjohann leads the ministry. As Saxon Finance Minister, he oversees five key areas. These include central administration and budget. Also, taxes, assets, construction, funding and EU funds.

Understandably, you cannot enter the building without an appointment. However, the impressive exterior is worth a visit. The view from the Elbe side is particularly striking. The gable side with its paintings is a must-see.

A small fountain grotto exists on the Elbe-facing south side of the ministry. It likely dates back to the building’s construction in 1896. It sits in front of the current dining hall. These were the former rooms of the minister’s residence. The grotto is nestled between an impressive flight of steps. The fountain has been without water since 1980, though it was renovated in 1971 and 1995.

The Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Kultus addresses education. This includes daycare centers and schools. It also handles cultural promotion. The ministry collaborates with various educational councils.

The building is a protected cultural monument in Dresden. The Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Kultus / Sächsisches Staatsministerium der Finanzen stands as a testament to Dresden’s history. It also represents the ongoing administration of Saxony’s finances and cultural affairs.
