Larbaud’s linguistic skills were impressive. He spoke English German Occitan Italian Portuguese and Spanish. He introduced foreign works to French readers. He translated Samuel Butler and supervised the translation of James Joyce’s Ulysses.

Larbaud had a vision for a united Europe. He imagined a federation of states where regions like Occitania could regain their identity. Montpellier would be its capital.

Despite his privileged life Larbaud faced challenges. In 1935 a stroke left him with paralysis and aphasia. He spent his final years unable to speak. He could only say “Bonsoir les choses d’ici-bas.” Good evening things down here.

He had to sell his properties and his library to Vichy. Valery Larbaud died in 1957. He left behind a legacy of literary achievement.
