A whirlwind of activity. That’s Westend. I see you gazing at its imposing glass facade. Did you know Westend wasn’t always this dazzling shopping and office complex?

Westend. A name echoing from a past era. It arose from the nickname “Westend” given to a small hotel near the Western Railway Station. This station. A major transportation hub. It was central to the area’s identity before Westend was even a thought. The old hotel? Gone now. Replaced by a modern marvel.

Imagine this area before 1998. A railway industrial site. Not exactly glamorous. But then came the vision. The bold plan. A massive construction project. Demjan Sandor’s Granit Polus Management company invested 200 million euros. Architect Finta Jozsef and his team transformed the site. The result? Westend.

The construction was lightning-fast. Completed in just 370 days. A record-breaking feat. The speed wasn’t just about efficiency. It was about seizing a moment. A chance to reshape a neglected part of Budapest. The design was innovative. The architects integrated a spectacular 20-meter waterfall. It’s a visual treat near the entrance from the Western Railway Station. It’s Westend’s unique signature.

Westend opened on November 12 1999. It wasn’t just a shopping mall. It was a statement. A third of its space was dedicated to office space. Another third to shopping and entertainment. There was even a five-star hotel. Initially a Hilton. Now a Crowne Plaza. The remaining third? A stunning three-hectare rooftop garden. A green oasis in the city’s heart. This rooftop garden is more than just greenery. It hosts events and activities throughout the year. A winter ice rink transforms into a summer playground.

Today Westend is a thriving hub. It houses over 400 shops. Around 50 restaurants and cafes offer diverse culinary options. The 14-screen Cinema City multiplex offers cutting-edge entertainment. The Westend complex continues to attract visitors from all over the world. It’s a symbol of Budapest’s modern dynamism. Its story is a testament to vision and rapid progress. It’s a truly memorable landmark. A must-see for anyone visiting Budapest.
