Lamar High School first opened its doors in 1970. It was Arlington Independent School District’s third high school. The opening of Lamar relieved pressure on Arlington High School and Sam Houston High School. Cathy Brown noted that Lamar’s impact on Sam Houston was minimal. This was because few housing units existed north of Division and east of Collins. She also noted that Arlington High School felt a huge effect. Housing in the Arlington zone north to Division shifted to Lamar.
Interestingly, 12th-grade students zoned out of Arlington High School continued to attend there. This was despite living in the Lamar zone.
In 1982, Martin High School opened. Sam Houston and Lamar were relatively unaffected. Martin was located in southwest Arlington.
Lamar High School is named for Mirabeau B. Lamar. He was the second president of the Republic of Texas. Lamar has been called “the Father of Texas Education”. He provided land to support education. During his administration, he set aside land for school development in each county. He also allotted land for the support of two universities. These universities later became Texas A&M University and the University of Texas.
The Lamar High School mascot is the Viking. The school colors are blue and gold. Let’s listen to the fight song. “Fight on, oh Vikings, for our fame. Fight on to victory. Lamar High School serves grades 9 through 12. In 2023-2024, the enrollment was 2,479 students. The student-to-teacher ratio is about 14.81.

Many notable alumni have walked the halls of Lamar High School. They have excelled in various fields. These alumni include actress Taylor Cole and radio personality Corby Davidson. Also included are Fred Jackson, a Buffalo Bills running back, and Jeremy Wariner. Wariner is a gold medalist in the 400 meters.
