Imagine tiny circuits humming with potential. Here at the School of Microelectronics, that potential becomes reality. Founded in April 2013 this school is Fudan University’s pilot engineering school. It addresses China’s urgent industrial demands. The School of Microelectronics strives to lead in global engineering education.

Back in 1958 Professor Xie Xide started the major of Semiconductor Physics. This was the school’s predecessor. Doctoral programs began in 1984. Microelectronics and Solid-state Electronics became a national key discipline in 1988. In May 2015 the school became a national demonstration school of microelectronics.

The School of Microelectronics has locations at both the Handan and Zhangjiang campuses of Fudan University. Here, it hosts national, provincial, and ministerial research platforms. In 1992 the National Key Laboratory of Application Specific Integrated Circuit and System was founded. It is the only national key lab in integrated circuits. The Yangtze River Delta Collaborative Innovation Center for Integrated Circuit Design and Manufacture was founded in 2013. Shanghai Education Commission approved the project that is led by the school. In 2014, the International Training Base of National Integrated Circuit Talents was founded. In 2018 the National Integrated Circuit Innovation Center was founded. This is a project under the national strategy of Manufacturing Power. The school focuses on the International Innovation Center for Micro/Nano Electronics and Quantum. It is the mainstay of the Zhangjiang-Fudan International Innovation Center.

The undergraduate program focuses on Microelectronic Science and Engineering. It enrolls about 120 full-time students each year. The school uses a “2+X years” cultivation system. This system integrates classroom learning, Fudan College sessions, research, entrepreneurship, social practices, overseas study, and new media. This system involves all faculty members. It covers the entire teaching process. It offers students wider choices to unleash their potential.

The major of Semiconductor Physics launched its doctoral program in 1984. Microelectronics and Solid-state Electronics became a national key discipline in 1988. Now, the school provides master and doctoral degree programs. It has launched a master program, a doctoral program, a M.Eng program, and an engineering doctorate program. Each year, around 200 postgraduates receive instructions from faculty. The school has 31 master supervisors and 33 doctoral supervisors. It employs more than 50 senior instructors from enterprises. It has co-founded internship and training bases with national key institutions and renowned enterprises.

The School of Microelectronics has a talent development strategy. It combines introduction with cultivation of faculty members. The faculty has innovative minds and world-class academic performance. The 136 faculty members include full-time teaching staff, engineering test technicians, administrative staff, project-based researchers, project assistants, and research team assistants. Among them are professors, associate professors, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and awardees of various funds. In addition, the school employs experts as chair professors from universities and enterprises at home and abroad.

The School of Microelectronics enhances its research capability. It emphasizes major platforms, research teams, projects, and achievements. The school enhances its core competitiveness in scientific research. It is constructing a technological innovation system. The system focuses on disciplinary research. It develops disciplinary transformation and application. The school hosts the National Key Laboratory of Application Specific Integrated Circuit and System. It also hosts the National Integrated Circuit Innovation Center.

The School of Microelectronics plays an active role in international cooperation. The International Training Base of National Integrated Circuit Talents was founded in 2014. It facilitates international communication and cooperation. It cultivates professionals with a global vision for the integrated circuit industry. The school integrates the curriculum with global perspectives. It aims at taking the lead in faculty capability and education quality. So next time you use your phone, remember that places like this drive the technology revolution.
