“A metal behemoth, straddling a bustling boulevard.” That’s the Parc des Expositions de la porte de Versailles for you. Right here, where trade and trends converge, stands this giant. It’s the second-largest exhibition center in France, a hub of activity and innovation. Parc des Expositions first flung open its doors in 1923. Paris needed a space to host the Foire de Paris, a grand trade fair that had outgrown its home on the Champ-de-Mars. The chosen location? Thirty-five hectares of land bordering Paris, Issy-les-Moulineaux, and Vanves. Imagine the buzz as the first pavilions rose, replacing the remnants of the old Thiers wall, a former city fortification.

Parc des Expositions has seen a lot of history unfold within its walls. In 1926, the Foire de Paris settled into its new home. A few years later, in 1937, a monumental entrance with four illuminated towers was added, a vestige of the International Exposition. These towers still grace the Parc des Expositions today. They stand as silent witnesses to the comings and goings of countless exhibitions. Did you know that during World War II, the Parc des Expositions temporarily housed military personnel? Its usual hustle and bustle of trade shows and exhibitions replaced with the somber realities of war.

The post-war years saw a resurgence of activity. The 1950s ushered in new exhibitions dedicated to everything from bicycles and heavy trucks to leather goods. Even the Concours Général Agricole, an agricultural competition, found a home here. This competition would later become part of the Salon de l’Agriculture, or International Agricultural Show, in 1964. Another big name joined the Parc des Expositions roster in 1962: the Paris Motor Show. Previously held at the Grand Palais, this prestigious event began alternating between Paris and Frankfurt starting in 1976.

Parc des Expositions continued to evolve. In 1970, a massive new hall, Hall 7, was inaugurated. This addition boosted the center’s capacity significantly. The 1980s saw the Paris Boat Show make its debut at the Parc des Expositions. A decade later, in 1992, the Paris Book Fair migrated from the Grand Palais to find its new home here. From 1996 to 2006, Parc des Expositions underwent a major modernization effort. Half of its facilities were rebuilt, enhancing its functionality and aesthetic appeal. Today, it boasts seven exhibition halls, three amphitheaters, and numerous meeting rooms. It’s a vibrant space that continues to host a diverse range of events, drawing millions of visitors each year.

But the story doesn’t end there. Parc des Expositions is still transforming. A multi-phase renovation project is underway, further modernizing the facilities and improving its urban integration. The project includes the Paris Convention Centre, one of the largest convention centers in Europe. It also features plans for hotels, green spaces, and even urban agriculture. As you stand before the Parc des Expositions today, you’re witnessing a dynamic space. It is constantly evolving, adapting to the needs of a changing world, yet holding onto echoes of its rich past. It remains a powerful symbol of Paris’s enduring spirit of innovation and exchange.
