A Parisian whisper. It speaks of a place where the faithful remember their beloved companions. The Cimetière des Chiens. Right here in Asnières-sur-Seine. A haven for furry friends past.

This isn’t your typical Parisian cemetery. The Cimetière des Chiens is unique. It’s considered the world’s first modern animal cemetery. Founded in 1899 by author Georges Harmois and journalist Marguerite Durand. It stands as a testament to the evolving bond between humans and their animal companions.

Imagine the scene. A time when animals were often viewed as purely utilitarian. Then came a shift. Animals became cherished members of families. Laws were created to improve animal welfare in life and death. Before 1898 animal remains were often discarded. This changed with a new law. Animals could be buried under specific conditions. Harmois and Durand sought a suitable location. They found it in Asnières-sur-Seine. A popular Sunday destination for Parisians seeking green spaces.

On May 2 1899 the Société française anonyme du cimetière pour chiens et autres animaux domestiques was formed. They acquired land on Île des Ravageurs. The cemetery opened its gates. It welcomed the remains of dogs cats birds and even horses and lions. Some animals received impressive monuments.

Initially plans included a columbarium and a museum. Only the gardens entrance building and necropolis were realised. The necropolis is divided into sections for different animals. The Art Nouveau entrance designed by Parisian architect Eugène Petit is a highlight. It opens onto the old Pont de Clichy.

The Seine arm was filled in. The cemetery lost its island character. Parc de l’île Robinson was created. The cemetery faced closure. The city of Asnières and supporters intervened. They purchased the cemetery to keep it open. In 1987 it was listed for its historical artistic and legendary interest. The city manages it. Renovations were completed in 2009.

Famous residents include Barry the Saint Bernard. A monument celebrates this Alpine mastiff. He reportedly saved 40 lives. Rintintin the famous movie dog is also here. Clément Michel Houellebecq’s dog rests here too. Kroumir Henri Rochefort’s cat is said to have died of grief. The cemetery’s 40 000th resident was a stray who died at the gate in 1958. A monument marks its resting place.

The Cimetière des Chiens. A timeless testament to animal companionship. A place where memories live on. A unique Parisian gem. A quiet reflection. A last tribute.
