The Town Hall stands proudly on Esplanade Road. It overlooks the Padang a historic parade ground. For decades this magnificent structure served as George Town’s administrative heart. It housed the Municipal Commission. The Town Hall also hosted lavish social events. These were exclusive affairs for the European elite. Locals were often barred from entry. It was even known as the ‘European Club’ a testament to its exclusivity.
Construction began in 1879. The foundation stone was laid by Lieutenant-Governor Colonel Archibald Anson. British Army engineers Captains Innes and Satterthwaite designed the building. The cost was a hefty 35000 Spanish dollars. The grand opening in 1880 was a spectacular affair attended by Governor Sir Frederick Weld. A marching band from Johor added to the celebration.
But the Town Hall’s role shifted. The Municipal Commission moved to the new City Hall in 1903. The Town Hall transformed into a social hub for the Europeans. Imagine elegant balls and lively performances. Filipino musicians entertained guests from 1890 to 1954. The Penang Library even found a home here for over two decades.
The Town Hall faced threats. Demolition was once considered. Thankfully the Malaysian National Museum intervened. The Town Hall was declared a Grade 1 historical monument. This saved the building from destruction. It has undergone several renovations keeping its rich history intact.
Today the Town Hall thrives. It’s a venue for public events and art exhibitions. It’s also a key player in the annual George Town Festival.
