Was it here in Istanbul that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, spent a crucial period of his life? This city holds echoes of his presence, his thoughts, and his actions. Let’s delve into the story of Atatürk in Istanbul.

Atatürk’s connection to Istanbul is profound. After the proclamation of the Republic, Atatürk frequently stayed at Dolmabahçe Palace. He spent nearly four years in Istanbul, primarily at this palace. Dolmabahçe Palace became a center for educational and cultural reforms. These reforms were a vital part of the Turkish revolution.

On July 1, 1927, Atatürk addressed guests in the Main Hall of Dolmabahçe Palace. He declared that the palace was no longer for sultans, “called the shadows of God”. Instead, he said it belonged to the nation, a living entity. This marked a new era for the palace and the entire Turkish nation.

Atatürk passed away at Dolmabahçe Palace in 1938. Today, the palace serves as a museum, honoring his memory. The film about Dolmabahçe Palace compares the palace’s role in the Ottoman period. It contrasts this with its transformation during the Republic, shaped by Atatürk’s presence.

Consider also Florya Atatürk Marine Mansion. It was built in 1935 for Atatürk’s recreational use. Designed in the Bauhaus style, the mansion sits offshore in the Sea of Marmara. Atatürk used it as a summer office and for relaxation during the last three years of his life. Important receptions and scientific meetings also took place here. Even the Duke and Duchess of Windsor visited.

Later, Turkish presidents used the Florya Mansion as a summer residence. In 1993, it opened to the public as a museum. It exhibits furniture, tableware, and Atatürk’s personal belongings, including his swimwear.

There is also the house where Atatürk resided during the National Struggle. He lived here from December 1918 to May 16, 1919. It was in this house that initial steps toward the nation’s liberation were taken. Atatürk was accompanied by his colleagues.

In 1925, a plaque was placed on the house’s facade. It read: “Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha prepared the liberation of the homeland in this house in 1335 (1919).” Today, this house is the Atatürk Revolution Museum. The museum displays Atatürk’s belongings, clothes, uniforms, and photographs. Documents in his handwriting, medals, and souvenirs are also on display.

Istanbul bears witness to Atatürk’s dedication. From palaces to seaside mansions and humble houses, his spirit remains. As you explore Istanbul, remember Atatürk’s legacy.
