Hidden on the island of Ravnik, Zelena špilja awaits. This green cave is more than just a pretty sight. It’s a protected natural monument since 1967.

The name Zelena špilja comes from a unique effect. Sunlight filters through an opening in the cave’s ceiling. It passes through the sea’s surface. The light illuminates the algae-covered bottom. This bathes the cave in a beautiful green glow.

Zelena špilja has two entrances. Small boats can pass through them easily. If you arrive in a motorboat you must turn off the engine. Many birds seek shelter in the cave. It is important not to disturb them.

Feel free to swim within the Zelena špilja. But remember visits are limited to ten minutes. This protects the cave’s delicate environment. You can also dive here. However, you must arrange it in advance.

The island of Ravnik isn’t inhabited. It’s covered in Mediterranean plants and Aleppo pines. Gulls and cormorants nest here adding to its wild charm. The island itself is a protected landscape.

Just less than a kilometer from the coast, Ravnik rises 38 meters above the sea. Zelena špilja is on the west side of its southern shore. It is a protected natural landmark. The green reflection comes from the many green algae in the water.

Stories say smaller warships hid here during World War II. The two entrances and the interior are large enough for boats.

Before the Blue Cave, Baron Eugen Ransonnet visited Zelena špilja. It is unknown if he wrote about it but it made a big impression. Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I visited Zelena špilja in 1875. He was with his entourage on the way from Vis to Komiža.

Zelena špilja does not have the intense blue light of the Blue Cave. The opening in the high dome lets sunlight stream in. It illuminates the sea bottom like a spotlight.

Those who don’t know where the light comes from might think it originates from the seabed. The cave’s darkness enhances the beam. It creates a holographic illusion.

Every July a festival called “Liti u škoje. Obo moru, kraju i jubavi” takes place. The event includes a visit to Zelena špilja. There is also an evening of poetry with Dalmatian choirs. A public celebration with a concert and grilled sardines takes place in Rukavac.

Gradina Vis d.o.o. manages Zelena špilja. They handle visits, tours and conservation efforts.

Zelena špilja is open from 9:00 to 17:00. Tours depend on the weather. You can bring your own small boats without motors. Swimming is allowed but keep it to ten minutes.

Tickets are sold before you enter Zelena špilja. You can buy tickets in advance to avoid long waits. Contact them by email for payment details. You can pick up your tickets on arrival or have them mailed.

Divers can explore Zelena špilja with advance notice. Exact timing must be agreed upon beforehand. Remember to report dives in advance during the summer. You will need consent and to pay a fee. This ensures safety due to Zelena špilja’s popularity.

So there you have it. The story of Zelena špilja. A cave of green light, hidden history and natural beauty.
