Amidst the grandeur of Buenos Aires, the Monumento a los Dos Congresos whispers tales of Argentina’s fight for freedom. This imposing monument, inaugurated in 1914, commemorates two pivotal moments: the Constitutional Assembly of 1813 and the Congress of Tucuman of 1816. These events paved the way for Argentina’s independence from the Spanish Empire. The Monumento a los Dos Congresos, one of the city’s largest sculptural monuments and fountains, dominates Plaza del Congreso. It faces the National Congress building, a symbolic pairing of past struggles and present governance. Belgian sculptor Jules Lagae crafted the monument’s figures, while architect Eugenio D’Huicque designed the stone base. The Monumento a los Dos Congresos features a central allegory of the Argentine Republic. She holds a laurel branch, symbolizing victory, and rests her hand on a plough, representing labor. At her feet lie the snakes of evil, vanquished by the nation’s will. Flanking her are figures representing the two pivotal congresses. The eastward-facing fountain embodies the Rio de la Plata.
