Fancy diving into a place where spirited learning meets a purpose larger than oneself? That’s San Francisco University High School. Founded in 1973 this private college preparatory high school opened its doors in 1975.
San Francisco University High School comprises four buildings. They are known as Upper Middle Lower and South campuses. Julia Morgan designed the oldest part Upper Campus in 1917. Originally it housed the Katherine Delmar Burke School a girls’ school. University High School acquired the building in 1975. Today Upper Campus houses the History and English Departments. You will also find the College Counseling and administrative offices here.
Middle Campus connects to Upper Campus via a bridge. Here you’ll find the school library and a 400-seat theater. The student center and cafeteria are located here. There are also state-of-the-art science labs and music rooms. The Summerbridge program also calls Middle Campus home. This UHS program supports talented students from local public middle schools. It provides them with resources they might otherwise lack.
Lower Campus houses the Math and Science Departments. The fitness center changing rooms and gym are also here. You’ll also find the athletic offices. Indoor sports take place in the gym. Field sports are mainly played at Paul Goode Field athletic complex nearby.
South Campus opened in the 2006-2007 school year. It is home to the Foreign Language and Art Departments. This campus includes a language lab and a large photography studio. You’ll also find art studios here.
San Francisco University High School boasts a diverse student body. The school has 490 students enrolled for the 2024-2025 year. They come from 98 different middle schools. Sixty percent of students self-identify as students of color. Thirty-two languages are spoken in their homes.
The faculty consists of 69 members. Eighty-one percent hold advanced degrees. The average teaching tenure at UHS is 10 years. Forty-eight percent of the faculty self-identify as faculty of color. The student to faculty ratio is 7:1. The average cluster size is 13.
UHS offers a wide array of courses. There are 119 courses including 95 electives. Students can study Chinese French Latin or Spanish. The school provides 41 AP and Honors courses.
Athletics are a big part of student life. San Francisco University High School has 42 sports teams across 20 different sports. The school also produces seven music and theater productions annually. There are three art openings each year. Off-campus study programs include School Year Abroad in China France Italy and Spain. CITYterm in New York City is also available.
