The year is 1892. High above the bustling streets of Morningside, a grand structure takes shape. The sound of hammers striking stone echoes through the air as Morningside High Church steadily rises towards the heavens. Little did anyone know this sacred space would one day transform into the beloved Church Hill Theatre. The Church Hill Theatre, nestled in the heart of Edinburgh, stands as a testament to the enduring power of transformation and the arts. Originally built as Morningside High Church in 1892, this architectural gem served its congregation for over half a century. However, fate had other plans. In 1963, the former church, designed by the renowned Scottish architect Hippolyte Blanc, embarked on a new chapter in its life. The Edinburgh Corporation purchased the building and, with a vision to foster the city’s vibrant amateur theatre scene, converted it into a space for performance. The curtain rose on this new era in 1965 when the newly christened Church Hill Theatre opened its doors to a captivated audience with a production of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”. Today, the Church Hill Theatre stands as a cultural hub. The theatre boasts a main auditorium with a capacity of 353, making it an ideal venue for both intimate and grand productions. A smaller studio space provides a more intimate setting for experimental works and workshops. From its origins as a place of worship to its current incarnation as a thriving theatre, Church Hill Theatre has consistently served as a gathering place for the community, its story woven into the very fabric of Edinburgh’s artistic tapestry.
