Opened in 1897 the Szent Margit Hospital stands before us a testament to Budapest’s rich history. This isn’t just any hospital. It’s a place where healing and history intertwine. The building itself is a beautiful example of late 19th-century architecture. It was built on a plot of land measuring 2803 square meters. The cost of construction was a considerable 240000 forints. The plans were drawn up by the City Engineering Office. Some sources attribute the designs to architect Henrik Bauer.

The Szent Margit Hospital wasn’t always independent. Initially it functioned as an extension of the old Saint John’s Hospital. Early on the hospital faced financial difficulties despite the dedicated work of doctors and nurses. World War I and the subsequent economic downturn prevented planned improvements. Despite challenges the hospital’s patient load steadily grew.

World War II brought further hardship. The hospital sustained significant bomb damage. Instead of closing it was gradually repaired and its civilian function restored. By 1950 the Szent Margit Hospital became an independent institution.

The 1956 Hungarian Revolution saw the hospital staff treat both Hungarian and Soviet soldiers. This was irrespective of which side they fought on. The hospital’s director Orsolya Endre was later imprisoned on fabricated charges. After his release he was quickly given a minimal pension.

The growth of Óbuda’s residential areas in the 1970s increased the demand for healthcare. This prompted major expansions. New pavilions A B and C were built by 1981. New departments were established. In 1996 the hospital opened its own chapel. The Szent Margit Hospital celebrated its centennial in 1997. In 2013 it once again became an independent entity. The hospital stands proudly in Budapest a beacon of hope and a reminder of resilience in the face of adversity. Its story is one of healing dedication and perseverance. A story told within these walls for over a century.
