Founded in 1884 Grays Baptist Church has a rich history. It began with Essex Baptist Association meetings in Chapel Villa. This was on London Road. An open communion church formed in 1885. That same year an iron church was built on Dell Road.
In 1894 the Tabernacle was built on Orsett Road. This is the same road we are standing on now. By 1936 Grays Baptist Church had 236 members.
Disaster struck during the Second World War. Bombing wrecked the church. Most of its records were lost. From 1944 services were held in the Sunday school. It is a separate building behind the main church. The Tabernacle reopened in 1948.
Membership declined to 119 by 1979. But the church continued its mission. Grays Baptist Church has stood here for over 135 years. The current building dates back to 1893. It stands just outside Grays town center.
