The imposing facade of the Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia stands before you. Its neo-Romanesque style is immediately apparent. The carefully arranged arches and the relief carvings tell a silent story.

This beautiful church in Mexico City’s Colonia Roma Norte is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to faith and community. Construction began in 1910. Don Pedro Lascurain and his family had a vision. They wanted a church dedicated to the Holy Family. Their devotion led them to donate the land. The project was initially sponsored by Jesuit priests.

The revolutionary struggles of 1913 to 1917 interrupted construction. Work restarted later. The church was finally inaugurated in 1925. The blessing of the tower and its clock marked a significant moment. The neo-Gothic rosette above the main entrance is surrounded by palms and seven circles. This adds a touch of elegance. The main doorway features a unique sequence of three arches.

Inside the Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia breathtaking stained-glass windows bathe the nave in color. These 25 magnificent windows feature organic designs. The talented artisans of the Italian company Talleri created them in Mexico. They depict scenes from the Bible and mysteries of Christian faith. Twelve windows run along the nave. Eight more are situated in the dome’s tambour. Four grace the side entrances. A final stunning window is found in the rosette.

Father Gonzalo Carrasco’s murals adorn the apse. His skillful brushstrokes are breathtaking. He was an exceptional artist. He graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1883. The murals depict the Holy Family. They are a stunning complement to the stained glass.

The Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia is much more than just a building. It’s a place of community. It embraces inclusivity. A weekly mass is celebrated for the gay community. This shows the parish’s dedication to all. The church also hosts ecumenical prayers for young people. This fosters interfaith dialogue.

More than a century old the Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia continues its mission. It serves the spiritual needs of Colonia Roma Norte. It’s a place of quiet contemplation and vibrant community life. The legacy of Don Pedro Lascurain lives on within its walls. A visit to this iconic church promises an unforgettable experience.
