In the quiet town of Meudon, nestled just outside the bustling heart of Paris, lies Rue Robert Julien Lanen. This seemingly ordinary street holds a story of remarkable courage and sacrifice. Robert Julien Lanen, born in Paris in 1921, lived a simple life as a metal turner with his parents in Meudon. Rue Robert Julien Lanen, his namesake, stands as a testament to his bravery during World War II. Lanen, refusing to submit to forced labor under the German occupation, joined the French Resistance. He found his way to the Maquis de Saffré, a resistance group of around three hundred men. Tragically, on June 28, 1944, the Maquis was attacked by over fifteen hundred German soldiers and French auxiliaries. Lanen was captured, accused of being a “franc-tireur,” and imprisoned in Nantes. The very next day, a German military tribunal sentenced him to death. He was executed alongside twenty-six of his comrades that night at the Château de la Bouvardière. Initially buried anonymously, Lanen’s body was later identified and laid to rest in the military section of Meudon’s communal cemetery. Rue Robert Julien Lanen is more than just a street; it is a poignant reminder of a young man’s unwavering defiance in the face of tyranny. It’s a tribute to the countless unsung heroes of the French Resistance who fought valiantly for their country’s liberation.
