In 1990, Marilaurice Hemlock found herself at a crossroads. She felt her career within the Catholic Church had hit a glass ceiling. She left her work at the University of Wisconsin and sought a fresh start in Minneapolis. One Sunday, a chance encounter at St. Stephen’s Church led her to an unexpected opportunity. The parish needed a liturgist. Intrigued by St. Stephen’s commitment to social justice and its vibrant ministry, Hemlock applied. With her background in music and pastoral studies, she was a perfect fit. She became the director of liturgy and music at St. Stephen’s in July 1991. Hemlock thrived at St. Stephen’s for 17 years. The parish was known for its progressive practices. These included women reading the Gospel and preaching, particularly in the more informal setting of the school gym. However, change was on the horizon. A new archbishop and pastor arrived, bringing with them stricter liturgical norms. These changes clashed with the inclusive spirit of St. Stephen’s. The community faced a difficult decision. They could conform or forge their own path. Ultimately, they chose the latter. In March 2008, the Spirit of St. Stephen’s Catholic Community was born. They carried their faith and traditions to a new location, a nearby converted mansion. This marked the beginning of their journey as an independent Catholic community. The Spirit of St. Stephen’s Catholic Community continued to evolve. They have since moved three times, adapting to their changing needs and circumstances. In 2021, they found a new home. They formed a unique partnership with Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church and Living Table United Church of Christ. This collaboration, known as “New Branches,” allows the three congregations to share resources and support each other. The Spirit of St. Stephen’s Catholic Community remains deeply rooted in Catholic tradition. Yet, they also embrace innovation. They have no ordained leader. Instead, they share the responsibility of leading services and sacraments. Their commitment to inclusivity and social justice continues to guide their path. They stand as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. They are a vibrant example of the diverse expressions of Catholicism in the modern world.
