“A defiant spirit, a young life cut short.” That’s the essence of Rue Robert Coatanroch in Saint-Denis. Robert Coatanroch, born in Saint-Denis in 1925, became a symbol of resistance against Nazi occupation. This street, named in his honor, holds a story of courage and sacrifice. Robert, a dessinateur industriel, joined the FTPF resistance. He was arrested at his home in Saint-Denis in 1943. Imprisoned in la Santé, he was later transferred to the Rouillé internment camp. In a daring raid, FTPF groups liberated Robert and others. He then joined the local resistance, taking command of a small group. Engaging in sabotage, Robert’s group attacked a German convoy. He was captured and condemned to death by a German military tribunal. Robert Coatanroch was executed at the Biard firing range near Poitiers in 1944. He was only 19. His remains now rest in Saint-Denis. Rue Robert Coatanroch stands as a tribute to his bravery. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during a dark period in history. The street’s quiet presence echoes with the spirit of a young man who fought for freedom.
