Picture the scene. You stand before the Most Holy Redeemer Parish Church better known as Masambong Church. Its humble beginnings were far from this grand structure. It started as a small chapel in Manresa. The first Catholic residents then moved it to Mabitoan and Inaman Streets. Its location proved uncertain. The chapel then found its present site.

Masambong Church holds a special place in Quezon City. It’s a Roman Catholic Church under the Diocese of Cubao. Its location at the corner of Malac and Inaman Streets in Barangay Masambong is significant. The church wasn’t always a parish.

Initially it was just a place for annual fiesta masses. The Cursillo movement arrived in 1971. This led to the renaming of the local Catholic association. It became Masambong Catholic Action or MCA. The increased involvement of lay leaders led to a request for regular Sunday mass. San Pedro Bautista Parish granted this request.

The small chapel couldn’t contain the growing number of worshippers. Expansions added wings to the building. Dona Susana Yao assisted in a significant renovation in 1990. The tireless efforts of MCA and Father Jimmy Giron finally resulted in a parish. His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin made it official.

On April 8 1994 the Most Holy Redeemer Parish was created. The Most Reverend Nereo P Odchimar DD became its first parish priest. The parish encompassed Barangays Masambong and Apolonio Samson. May 1st became the Feast Day. Christ the Redeemer on the Cross was chosen as its patron saint.

The church has seen many renovations. These reflect its community’s dedication. Father Reynaldo J Adalid OP oversaw major renovations. He also introduced devotion to Saint Lorenzo Ruiz who became a second patron saint. Father Michell Joe B Zerrudo added an altar with icons. He created an adoration chapel open 24/7.

Father Jose Glenn V Orocio continued the improvements. He beautified the church grounds with plants and orchids. The church’s interior was updated. He also encouraged greater lay participation. Various ministries were established. Church organizations were revived.

Masambong Church’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the faith perseverance and love of its community. It stands as a beacon of faith hope and community. Reflect on the history you’ve witnessed here today. The church stands as a symbol of faith in Masambong.
