“Rue Joseph Darriet,” the sign reads. It’s not a grand boulevard, no grand avenue, just a quiet street in the heart of Le Blanc-Mesnil. Now, you might not know that name, but this street is named after a true hero of the Resistance.

Joseph Darriet was a man of many hats. He was an insurance agent, a devoted husband, and a passionate communist. He was also an active fighter against the Nazi occupation. During this dark time, he served as the treasurer for the communist organizations in Saint-Denis and Pierrefitte. He hid propaganda materials, helping spread the message of hope and rebellion.

But his work didn’t go unnoticed. On August 30, 1941, Joseph was arrested by the Gestapo. They found evidence of his activities, like leaflets and a duplicating machine, hidden at his home. He was sentenced to hard labor for life.

However, the story doesn’t end there. The injustice of his situation fueled the German resistance, and the Resistance was emboldened as a result. His name is inscribed on the war memorial in Fontevrault, where he was executed, as well as on the memorial in his hometown, Solférino.

So, as you stand here on Rue Joseph Darriet, remember the courage and sacrifice of this man who fought for liberty. He may have been a quiet man at first, but his name echoes with the spirit of resistance.
