“Fifty years firm and strong” declared Padre Lindolfo Lisboa. These words marked a significant milestone for the Capela Menino Jesus de Praga. Today we celebrate its rich history right here in Rio de Janeiro.

This Capela Menino Jesus de Praga is the only one in Rio de Janeiro with this title. Its story began with a community’s longing for a local place to worship. Imagine residents having to travel all the way to Bangu for church services.

In 1961 the Vila Aliança community started a movement. They wanted a dedicated space for prayer. So they held Catholic services in public squares hoping to attract attention. A group of women collected signatures. Their goal was to ask the governor for land to build a church. Their efforts paid off. The land was donated and construction finished in 1965.

Padre Lindolfo Lisboa chose the name. He was inspired by a radio broadcaster who often spoke about the Menino Jesus. Also he learned of a church with an altar dedicated to the Menino Jesus de Praga. It was on Rua Mariz e Barros in Tijuca. He sought permission from Dom Jaime de Barros Câmara. Dom Jaime was the cardinal at the time. He allowed Padre Lindolfo to name the parish after Menino Jesus. This made it the first in Rio dedicated to him.

Before the church was built services were held in a wooden shack. Padre Lindolfo described it as difficult. The Capela Menino Jesus de Praga has had many priests. Each one left their mark especially in social work.

Padre Márcio Ferreira dos Santos is the current pastor. He highlighted the Pastoral do Quilo. It is one of the church’s main activities. About 150 families receive food and social assistance. The project helps over 600 people monthly including emergencies.

The Capela Menino Jesus de Praga celebrated its 50th anniversary in December 2015. Dom Orani João Tempesta the Cardinal Archbishop presided over a special mass.
The church continues to serve the community. It stands as a testament to faith community spirit and the enduring legacy of Padre Lindolfo Lisboa.
