How many stories lie beneath our feet here at Aziz Yorgi. This is no ordinary cemetery. It is a place where the past whispers to the present.

Welcome to Aziz Yorgi, a historic and culturally significant site. It is more than just a final resting place. It embodies Istanbul’s rich tapestry of faith and heritage.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine Istanbul as Constantinople. This was the heart of the Byzantine Empire. Later, it became the Ottoman Empire. Amidst this transformation, Aziz Yorgi emerged.

Aziz Yorgi probably has connections to the Greek Orthodox Church. It is dedicated to Saint George. The church has served as the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople since around 1600. The leader is regarded as the first among equals in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is frequently looked upon as the spiritual leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians worldwide.

The Patriarchal Cathedral Church of St. George is in the Fener district. This area became the recognized center of Greek Christian life in the city after 1453. This gives us a clue as to the possible origin of Aziz Yorgi.

The church itself has been rebuilt many times. Fires and political turmoil caused damage over the centuries. Yet, it stands as a symbol of resilience.

Consider the laws of the Ottoman Empire. These laws governed the rights of dhimmis. They stipulated that all non-Islamic buildings must be smaller and humbler than mosques. This explains why St. George’s Church is relatively small.

Imagine the church filled with pilgrims. They come from Greece and other Orthodox countries. They come to pay homage. They seek solace. The church is outwardly modest. Its interior is lavishly decorated.

The church holds precious objects. There is a patriarchal throne. It dates back to the 5th century. There are also rare mosaic icons. Relics of Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom are also housed here.

In 2004, Pope John Paul II returned some of the bones of these two saints. They were looted from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade in 1204.

Sadly, Aziz Yorgi, like the church, has faced challenges. In 1997, a bomb attack injured a deacon. It damaged the Patriarchal church. This was one of many terrorist attacks against the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul.

Today, Aziz Yorgi stands as a testament to faith. It is a symbol of cultural identity. It connects us to centuries of history. As we stand here, let us reflect on the stories etched in stone. Let us remember the lives and faith of those who came before us. Their legacy lives on in this sacred ground.
