Did you know that the Escola Prática de Serviço de Material once occupied the facilities of the Regimento de Artilharia Pesada nº 1 in Sacavém? The Escola Prática de Serviço de Material, or EPSM, has a history tied to the evolution of the Portuguese Army’s logistical support.
The Escola Prática de Serviço de Material was created in April 1961. This happened under Decree-Law number 43595. The goal was to provide essential training. It focused on the technical and tactical preparation of personnel.
The mission of the Escola Prática de Serviço de Material was multifaceted. It included providing instruction. This was for all specialists in material services. The exception was those in electrical and electronics. The Escola Prática de Serviço de Material also organized courses. These courses facilitated promotions. They imparted technical and tactical knowledge. This knowledge was needed for service execution and leadership. The EPSM even collaborated on studies. These studies helped in preparing regulations and manuals.
The Escola Prática de Serviço de Material was first located in Sacavém. It was housed in the Regimento de Artilharia Pesada n.º 1. During its initial organization, it was administratively attached to this regiment. Instructionally, the Escola Prática de Serviço de Material reported to the Direção do Serviço de Material.
In February 1993, Decree-Law number 50 led to a significant change. The Escola Prática de Serviço de Material was transferred to Entroncamento. It began operating there on September 1, 1993. The EPSM then occupied the facilities of the Batalhão do Serviço de Material. It was administratively and logistically dependent on the battalion.
However, the story of the Escola Prática de Serviço de Material doesn’t end there. In 2006, a reorganization of the Army’s structure occurred. The Escola Prática de Serviço de Material was extinguished. On July 1, 2006, the Regimento de Manutenção was created. This happened following Dispatch number 12 555/2006. It was a consequence of the EPSM’s extinction.
Despite its closure, the traditions and historical heritage of the Escola Prática de Serviço de Material lived on. They were inherited by the new Escola Prática dos Serviços. This new school also inherited traditions from other units. These included the Escola Prática do Serviço de Transportes.
The coat of arms of the Escola Prática de Serviço de Material tells a symbolic story. The shield is red. It features an open book. Above and below, there’s a flaming grenade. On each side, there is a cogwheel. All are in gold. The open book symbolizes the school’s teaching function. The grenade and cogwheel are traditional emblems. The crest depicts Vulcano. He is represented by a lion. The lion strikes a spark from a stone. This symbolizes the creation of fire. Fire is essential for forging metals. The motto is “A PÁTRIA E O EXÉRCITO SERVIMOS”. It translates to “We serve the Homeland and the Army”.
