In the heart of Shanghai, nestled on Shangwen Road, lies Longmen Village. It’s a place where time seems to slow down. The echoes of history whisper through the long, tranquil lane. Longmen Village is currently Shanghai’s longest lane, a remarkable example of a lilong, a traditional Shanghainese residential alleyway. This unique urban form blends Chinese and Western architectural styles. It offers a fascinating glimpse into Shanghai’s vibrant past. Longmen Village’s gate, with its embracing entrance and two-story gatehouse, stands as a silent sentinel. Above the entrance, the faded characters for “Longmen Village” hint at the stories within. This place wasn’t always a residential lane. Its predecessor, Longmen Academy, was originally a private garden called “My Garden,” renowned for its beautiful peach blossoms. In the early 1900s, part of the garden was acquired to build the “Xianlie Shrine.” Later, in 1905, the remaining land became the site of Longmen Academy. Over time, Longmen Academy evolved. It became Longmen Normal School and then Jiangsu Provincial Shanghai Middle School. Today, Shanghai Middle School, one of Shanghai’s top high schools, traces its roots back to Longmen Village. In 1934, a real estate company purchased the abandoned Longmen Academy. They divided the land and constructed 94 buildings in a variety of styles. These include Western-style townhouses, European villas, Shikumen-style lane houses, and lilong residences. The diverse architecture of Longmen Village reflects the eclectic tastes of its early builders. It showcases a blend of Western influences and traditional Chinese elements. At that time, a single apartment in Longmen Village cost three gold bars, a testament to its exclusivity. The lane’s unique history and architectural charm have made it a popular destination for tourists. They come to experience the authentic atmosphere of old Shanghai. Inside Longmen Village, you can still find remnants of its past, including a traditional barbershop and a small grocery store selling fresh produce. Although many of the original features have been preserved, some buildings have been renovated. The renovations provide modern comforts while retaining the lane’s historic character. Longmen Village remains a vibrant community. It is home to nearly a thousand residents, mostly elderly Shanghainese. As an officially designated historical site, Longmen Village continues to thrive. The local residents’ committee works tirelessly to maintain the lane’s unique character. They promote recycling and provide community services, particularly for the elderly. This community’s resilience is a testament to the enduring spirit of old Shanghai. Today, Longmen Village stands as a testament to the rich history of a bygone era. While the surrounding area undergoes rapid development, this lane remains a peaceful oasis. It preserves the charm of old Shanghai in the midst of a bustling metropolis.
