Once upon a time, Bremen faced a housing crisis after World War II. The solution? The creation of Gartenstadt Vahr.
Today we are standing in the Gartenstadt Vahr. It is a district designed to provide homes and green spaces. It is located in Bremen. Bremen started building the Gartenstadt Vahr in 1954. The goal was to create 2,200 apartments quickly.
The Vahr became a district of Bremen in 1959. The Gartenstadt Vahr is one of its parts. The others were Neue Vahr Nord and Neue Vahr Süd. Later, Neue Vahr Süd was divided into Südwest and Südost.
Gartenstadt Vahr stands out. It has more green spaces and is less densely built. This gives it a garden city feel. Living here means easy access to Bremen’s heart. Bus lines 21 and 25 connect it to the city center and the university.
Before 1950, this area was different. It was part of Hastedt. Farmers used it as farmland. In 1900, people in Hastedt started building small gardens. They wanted to grow their own vegetables. The Kleingartenverein Feldmark Hastedt e. V. was founded. It is the oldest establishment in Gartenstadt Vahr. Its name still shows its connection to Hastedt.
The area remained mostly farmland until the 1950s. Even though nearby areas were developing. The need for housing changed everything.
The Gewoba housing company planned the development in 1956. Architects designed row houses and family homes. Karlaugust Orf designed the green spaces.
The Vahr is known for its green character. It features row buildings, row houses and individual homes. The district has become known for harmonious living. People from different backgrounds live together here.
The Vahr has seen many changes over the years. Sanierungen and redesigns have improved the quality of life. The Berliner Freiheit is a key area. It is a shopping and service center in Neue Vahr Südost. The Aalto-Hochhaus is nearby. This 22-story building is a landmark. Alvar Aalto, a Finnish architect, designed it.
Today, about 3,447 people live in Gartenstadt Vahr. It covers an area of 1.86 square kilometers. The Gartenstadt Vahr offers a blend of community and nature. This makes it a unique place to live in Bremen.
