Step back in time, and imagine a world where cotton was king. The Malcolm and Margaret Badger Reed Estate Plaque marks the spot where a prominent Austin family once lived. Malcolm Reed, a native Texan, followed in his father’s footsteps and became a leading cotton exporter. He met and married Margaret “Maggie” Badger of Marble Falls in 1898. In 1908, they moved to Austin and in 1929, they built their dream home right here. The Italian Renaissance style house was designed by acclaimed architect Hal Thomson. The home features a distinctive low-pitch hip roof, intricate brackets, a recessed porch, and elaborate detailing. It remained in the Reed family until 1990 when it passed on to their daughter, Margaret, and her husband, Joseph Cocke. In 2006, the Malcolm and Margaret Badger Reed Estate Plaque was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. It’s a reminder of the legacy of this prominent family who contributed to the growth and prosperity of Austin.
