Stepping into Square Salvador Allende, you are greeted by a bustling scene. In the 7th arrondissement, one of Paris’s most elegant districts, this small square is a haven of calm amidst the city’s energy. It is a tribute to Salvador Allende, the democratically elected president of Chile, who died in a military coup in 1973. The square is a reminder of the Chilean struggle for democracy and social justice. It lies at the intersection of the Boulevard de la Tour-Maubourg, Avenue de la Motte-Picquet, and Rue de Grenelle.

The square, originally named Place Santiago du Chile, was renamed in 2003 in honor of Salvador Allende. The change, however, sparked opposition from the local residents and even the council of the 7th arrondissement. The square has a rich history. It was inaugurated under Napoleon III, with the initial name evoking a strong connection with Chile’s capital, Santiago. This connection was due to the proximity of the Chilean embassy to the square. A fountain, crafted by Gabriel Davioud and sculpted by Théophile Murguet, adds to the charm of the square. It has been a key feature since 1902, relocated from the Place de la Madeleine.

Despite a marble fountain and statues, the square is a quiet oasis. It is a place for locals to relax and contemplate the rich history of the surrounding area. This small square, filled with history and cultural resonance, invites you to pause, reflect, and remember the legacy of Salvador Allende.
