Opened in 1854, Rue Duroc whispers stories of a time long past. This street, nestled in Lyon’s 1st arrondissement, specifically the Chartreux quarter, isn’t just a path; it’s a tribute to a remarkable figure. Rue Duroc honors Géraud Christophe Michel Duroc, a key player in Napoleon’s inner circle. He served as Grand Marshal of the Palace. His life, however, met a tragic end during the Battle of Bautzen in 1813. Rue Duroc begins its journey at Cours Général-Giraud and concludes at Rue Philippe-Gonnard. Today, cyclists enjoy a two-way path along its length. Cars travel uphill, following the ascending street numbers. Parking lines both sides of this charming street. A dedicated bicycle parking area sits conveniently at the street’s entrance. The north side of Rue Duroc showcases a harmonious row of modern buildings. These structures, with their simple Croix-Roussien style and abundant windows, provide a modern contrast to the street’s historical namesake. Meanwhile, the odd-numbered side boasts 19th-century facades. Many have been beautifully restored, preserving a touch of the past. Look closely at number 4. A unique workshop space has created an interesting offset, allowing the owner a charming private balcony. At number 10, ornate wrought-iron initials crown the doorway. These small details tell the story of the individuals who have called Rue Duroc home. This area, once the site of gardens belonging to the Chartreux monks, underwent a transformation in the mid-1800s. This marked the birth of Rue Duroc. The north side saw further change in 2002, when older buildings were replaced with the current structures. Despite these changes, remnants of past workshops and small industries can still be seen. They offer glimpses into the street’s vibrant history. Rue Duroc, more than just a street, is a living testament to Lyon’s rich past.
