Is it possible that a former gravel quarry could become a green oasis? Here on Avenue de la Plage Bleue, we find ourselves at the gateway to such a transformation. This avenue leads to the Parc Départemental de la Plage Bleue. It is a testament to nature’s resilience and the city’s commitment to green spaces.

La Plage Bleue, or Blue Beach, wasn’t always a park. In the early 20th century, this area was fertile marshland. Farmers cultivated their crops here. Later, the landscape changed. The industrial extraction of sand created a mosaic of small pools. These pools were fed by the groundwater.

By the mid-1960s, one of these water bodies became a popular spot. Bathers and strollers flocked to it. The area became known as “Plage Bleue”. Unfortunately, by 1979, the water quality declined. Authorities closed the site to the public due to increasing unsanitary conditions.

But the story doesn’t end there. In 1987, a new vision emerged. The local council decided to create a 40-hectare park. This park would be part of a regional green corridor project. Thus, La Plage Bleue began its transformation.

The park’s design is contemporary and unique. Its vast open spaces and distinct landscaping earned it the Landscape Trophy in 1993. It also received recognition in the 1994 Urban Development Awards.

Today, the Avenue de la Plage Bleue welcomes everyone. Nature lovers can explore a remarkable nature reserve. Birdwatchers can spot grey herons, Egyptian geese, cormorants, and more. Plant enthusiasts can admire a variety of species. Even beehives promote pollination.

The park offers activities for all. There is beach volleyball, BMX, skating, and model sailing. Jogging, orienteering, fishing, and pétanque are also popular. Basketball, handball, volleyball, and soccer are available too. During the summer, visitors can borrow sports equipment. Children can enjoy playgrounds and build sandcastles.

La Plage Bleue is more than just a park. It is a place for exchange, love, and joy. It provides a relaxing escape. The park is also a key part of the Tégéval green corridor project. This 20 km path will eventually connect the Val-de-Marne park to the Notre-Dame forest.

Please note that barbecues are no longer allowed in the park. The park is open year-round. Opening hours vary depending on the month.

As you stroll along the Avenue de la Plage Bleue, remember its history. It is a story of transformation. A former industrial site became a haven for nature and recreation. It’s a place where you can relax, play, and connect with nature. The avenue invites you to discover the treasures within La Plage Bleue.
