Beneath the shadow of the Galata Tower, Saint Paul Church stands as a testament to resilience. This isn’t the original structure, mind you. Fire has been a cruel mistress to Saint Paul. The current church, built by the Fossati brothers between 1841 and 1843, rises from the ashes of previous incarnations. The original Church of San Paolo, a Dominican sanctuary, fell victim to Sultan Mehmet II’s decree in 1475 and was converted into a mosque. The Dominicans relocated, establishing a smaller chapel dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. This humble chapel became a church in 1604, only to be ravaged by fire in 1660. Rebuilt in 1702, it burned again in 1731. Each rebirth of Saint Paul underscores the enduring strength of faith in this bustling corner of Istanbul. Inside Saint Paul, a remarkable icon holds court, the Virgin of the Hodegetria. Rescued from the flames that consumed the original San Paolo, its presence links the current church to its predecessors. Look closely. While the Virgin’s mantle, adorned with French fleurs-de-lis, speaks to later interventions, her face and chest may hold the gaze of centuries past. The church itself is a basilica, its cupola a calming sky-blue dotted with golden stars. Step outside and explore the narrow alleyway. It is a poignant space, the walls lined with weathered gravestones, whispers of lives lived under the watchful eye of Saint Paul. Many of the inscriptions are in Italian, a testament to the waves of European immigrants who found their first home in this vibrant Galata neighborhood. Saint Paul Church isn’t just a place of worship, it is a living chronicle of Istanbul’s rich tapestry of cultures and faiths.
