Dive into the past. The Royal Commonwealth Pool. Right here before you stands a marvel of modernist architecture. It’s more than just a pool. It’s a testament to Edinburgh’s ambition.

The Royal Commonwealth Pool opened in 1970. It wasn’t just a whim. The city dreamt big. Lord Provost Sir Herbert Archbold Brechin spearheaded a plan. He wanted to host the Commonwealth Games. The Royal Commonwealth Pool was a crucial part of that vision. Sir John Inch and other committee members helped make it a reality.

Construction began in 1967. Robert Matthew Johnson Marshall designed the building. Ove Arup & Partners contributed their expertise in structural engineering. The result? A stunning structure nicknamed “the Commie”. It’s a Category-A listed building. That means it’s considered one of Scotland’s most important buildings.

The Royal Commonwealth Pool hosted elite diving events. It was the stage for the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. It later hosted events at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the inaugural 2018 European Championships.

The pool wasn’t always perfect. It closed for a major refurbishment from 2009 to 2012. The project cost around £37 million. The upgrades included new 25-meter diving and teaching pools. Improvements were also made to the changing rooms café reception and dive gym. S&P Architects now Space&Place Architects led the renovation. They even won a Scottish Design Award for the best reuse of a listed building.

The Royal Commonwealth Pool is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of ambition. It’s a place where athletes have pushed their limits. It is a place where generations of Edinburgh residents have learned to swim. It continues to be a vibrant community hub. Step inside and feel the energy of this iconic Scottish landmark.
