Born in 1924 in Viry-Noureuil his family later settled in Buzenval a neighborhood of Rueil-Malmaison. He was nicknamed “The Tarzan of Buzenval” a fitting title for a man known for his strength and powerful punches. His early life was humble. His father was a gravedigger and his mother worked as a caddy. He honed his skills at a local church patronage learning boxing and gymnastics.

Dauthuille’s amateur career was dazzling. He won over fifty fights between 1941 and 1942. He became the 1944 Parisian champion and French champion. His professional debut was in 1944. He quickly gained renown for his aggressive style and knockout power. He won many fights against notable opponents. These victories included wins over Jake LaMotta and Steve Belloise. These were significant wins in his career.

His most famous fight was against Jake LaMotta in 1950. This was a middleweight title fight. He was ahead on points. He was winning. Then with thirteen seconds left LaMotta unleashed a flurry of punches. Dauthuille was knocked out. The fight was named Ring Magazine’s Fight of the Year. This fight is remembered to this day.

Despite his success in Canada his career declined. A fall down a staircase damaged his body and his spirit. He was forced into retirement in 1952. He wrestled. He worked odd jobs. He struggled with alcoholism.

His later years were marked by hardship and obscurity. He died by suicide in 1971 at the age of 47. His life was a story of triumph and tragedy.
