Hidden in plain sight, Rue Friant meanders through the 14th arrondissement of Paris. It whispers tales of a time long past, when milkmaids traversed its path. They carried their precious cargo from the farms of Montrouge, Bagneux, and Châtillon. Rue Friant wasn’t always known by this name. Originally, it was part of a longer route leading to Grand-Montrouge. It bore names like “Rue du Pot-au-Lait” (Milk Jug Street), a nod to those hardworking milkmaids. Before that, it was “Avenue du Grand Montrouge,” “Avenue de Montrouge,” and even “Chemin du Château.” This “château” belonged to the Duke of Vitry during the reign of Louis XIII. The duke was known as the executioner of Concini, Marshal of France. This suggests Rue Friant’s history stretches back to the 17th century, possibly even the 16th. Imagine the road, a simple dirt path then, winding its way through the countryside. Today, the route is fragmented. It exists as Rue Friant, Avenue de la Porte de Montrouge, and Avenue de la République in Montrouge. The street’s current name honors General Louis Friant, Count of the Empire. It was bestowed in 1864. Friant was a remarkable figure. He survived the revolutionary period and the Napoleonic era. He participated in numerous battles and lived to the ripe old age of 71, dying in 1829. The street’s location, near the former Rue Militaire (now the Boulevards des Maréchaux, including Boulevard Brune), explains this tribute to a military hero. Rue Friant also boasts some notable features. Lycée Lucas-de-Nehou, a high school, stands at number 19. Near the intersection with Rue de Coulmiers, you can still see the bridge over the abandoned Petite Ceinture railway line. Today, the area beneath has been transformed into community gardens. This quiet street, Rue Friant, holds centuries of history. It’s a testament to the evolution of Paris from a collection of villages to the bustling metropolis it is today.
