Picture the sleek lines of the Musick Point Memorial Radio Station. It stands proudly against the Auckland skyline. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to communication a bridge across oceans. Built in 1940 the station officially opened in 1942. World War II delayed the grand opening. The station’s name honours Ed Musick a daring aviator. His flight in 1937 foreshadowed New Zealand’s connection to the world.

Musick Point was chosen carefully. Its remote location minimized interference. This was a vast improvement over Auckland Radio’s previous home. The old location was the Chief Post Office downtown. The trams caused a lot of static. The station wasn’t alone. A secondary bunker was built 300 meters away. This was a precaution in case of bombing.

The station was more than just a building. It played a crucial role in World War II. American naval forces used it. It was the hub of long-range radio transmissions for Auckland. Ships and aircraft relied on it. Think of the vital messages relayed the lives it touched.

Musick Point’s isolation was key. It offered superb radio reception. Transmitters were situated a few kilometers away in Oliver Road. Operators at the point controlled them remotely. The station housed Auckland Radio ZLD for maritime communications. It also housed ZLF for aviation. The New Zealand Post Office initially operated both. The Civil Aviation Corporation took over aviation radio in 1957 moving it to Mangere Aerodrome.

The station’s importance lessened over time. Coastal radio stations closed in 1993. ZLD ceased operation at Musick Point. The land became Crown land. However the station’s legacy lives on. The Musick Point Radio Group a non-profit organization leased the building. They reactivated the station. They use amateur radio bands and modern equipment. A plaque recognizes its “engineering heritage value”.

The Musick Point Memorial Radio Station is more than just ruins. It’s a living museum. It stands as a symbol of ingenuity connection and the enduring power of communication.
