Golden sand gleams under the New Zealand sun. This is Church Bay a haven on Waiheke Island. Church Bay boasts soft golden sand stretching 200 meters. It’s a picturesque beach on Waiheke Island’s eastern coast.

Long ago Maori knew this place as Kaioruru. It means sheltered place or food of the morepork. A Maori worker named Ruru lived here. Land east of the bay was set aside for the Anglican Church. That’s how Church Bay got its name.

Church Bay wasn’t always a tranquil paradise. It was once a bustling center of industry. Before holiday homes appeared the bay supported various businesses. The abundant kaimoana fish and shellfish drew Maori for generations. Sadly European settlers overexploited these resources. Sharp dredges destroyed oyster beds. The loss of habitat harmed the fish population.

Oyster farming was attempted. A large application to create an oyster bed was rejected. Smaller attempts might have taken place. Low tides revealed plentiful oysters accessible to local residents. The Deep Sea Fishing Company arrived in 1872. They leased land to supply Christchurch with fish. They built a fish-curing plant and huts for workers. These men were among Church Bay’s first Pakeha settlers.

The company used boats like the Nautilus and the Result. They caught trumpeter sole habuka moki and crayfish. Smoked trumpeter became a Christchurch favorite. The company planned to keep fish alive for a consistent supply. By 1874 however the company failed. Transporting fish from Church Bay might have proved too difficult. Landing fish without a proper jetty presented another challenge.

James Hay and his wife Jean later bought the company’s land. They lived there for years after James’ death. Today Church Bay offers swimming snorkeling fishing and boating. Paid parking is available. Restrooms and showers add to the visitor’s convenience. It’s a popular spot for enjoying Waiheke Island’s natural beauty. Come and explore Church Bay. Discover its rich history and stunning natural beauty for yourself.
