The shimmering spires of the Şişli Mosque pierce the Istanbul sky. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a silent witness to centuries of Şişli’s transformation.

Şişli. A name whispered on the wind. A name that echoes through the bustling streets of this Istanbul district. For centuries Şişli was open countryside. Hunters stalked its fields. Farmers tilled its soil. People sought leisure in its calm. That changed. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw its evolution. Şişli became a haven for the middle class.

This wasn’t a homogenous group. Jews Greeks Armenians and Turks all built lives here. French influences shaped the architecture. Wide avenues appeared. Grand stone buildings rose. Many had high ceilings and art nouveau wrought-iron balconies. Tiny elevators ran on wires inside stairwells. This period followed a devastating fire in nearby Pera now Beyoğlu. Many sought refuge rebuilding their lives in Şişli. Some families from Istanbul’s Armenian community still live in the Kurtuluş neighborhood. The area also attracted Levantine Catholic families. They were traders or contracted by the Ottoman Empire. Migrants from Greece and the Balkans also arrived. Şişli was one of Istanbul’s first areas to gain tram lines electricity and natural gas. The Darülaceze orphanage and Şişli Etfal Hospital were built. So were French schools. St Michel and Notre Dame de Sion.

The Turkish Republic’s founding in the 1920s spurred further development. Larger buildings appeared along Halaskargazi Caddesi. Shops flourished beneath tall apartment and office buildings. The middle class remained prominent. But traders writers and poets also flocked to Şişli. The area gained theaters cafes and other cultural amenities. The Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus was built in the 1950s. Others followed.

Then came migration from Anatolia. People sought work in Istanbul. Many built illegal settlements gecekondu on unclaimed land. Some settled in northern Şişli particularly around Mecidiyeköy. Today’s Şişli is different. The wealthy have moved to the suburbs. Large avenues house offices banks and shops. This makes up a significant portion of Istanbul’s Central Business District. Since the 1970s many older buildings have been replaced by newer structures. The backstreets remain residential. Working class families and students live there. Shops cafes and pubs abound. Şişli isn’t wealthy but its central location keeps it desirable.

Şişli Mosque remains a centerpiece. Its architectural grandeur is a testament to the district’s past. It’s a reminder of the varied threads woven into the fabric of Şişli’s history. A testament to its enduring spirit. It is a place of both quiet reflection and vibrant life. A place to feel the past present and future of Şişli all at once.
