“Condemned observation cells ahead.” Those words echo with the weight of history as we approach D Division at Pentridge Prison. This bluestone building stands as a stark reminder of Melbourne’s criminal past. D Division was more than just a prison block. It was a prison within a prison.

Pentridge Prison itself was built in 1850. It aimed to relieve pressure on the Old Melbourne Gaol. Initially, it was not that strong. People said a man could push out the weatherboards.

In 1857, they began constructing a much stronger prison. This included a six-meter high wall. Inside were five cell blocks. D Division became one of them.

D Division served many purposes. It held remand prisoners awaiting trial. It was also used for assessment and high-risk inmates. Imagine the tension within these walls.

The architecture here is stripped-down neo-classical. Think of a cathedral but with cells instead of pews. The cross-design floor plan emphasizes its somber nature. Heavy cell doors and iron stairs add to the feeling.

Executions occurred in D Division. The hanging beam from the Melbourne Gaol was moved here in 1924. Next to it stood a special cell. The condemned man spent his last night there. It was twice the size of regular cells. An overseer stayed to prevent suicide. The prisoner could have his last meal. No visitors were allowed, except a priest.

Ronald Ryan was the last man executed in Australia. He was hanged in D Division in 1967. Ryan had been convicted of murdering a prison officer. His body was buried in an unmarked grave within D Division.

Many notorious prisoners were held within Pentridge. Some were housed here in D Division while awaiting trial. Ned Kelly, the infamous bushranger, was one such inmate.

D Division offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of prison life. The small cells and the concrete exercise yard are telling. Imagine spending your days within these confines.

Today, Pentridge Prison has been redeveloped. It is now a housing estate. However, the outer walls and main entrance are still here. D Division remains as a preserved building.

You can take tours led by former prison officers and even former prisoners. Hear first-hand accounts of what life was like inside. They share colorful anecdotes and humor. They concentrate on the day-to-day operation of the prison.

While D Division has been repainted, its essence remains. The authenticity of the guides makes the tour special.

Consider the weight of history contained within these walls. The condemned observation cells stand as a silent testament. They evoke the memories of those who spent their final days here. D Division is a powerful reminder of our past. It encourages us to reflect on justice and punishment.
