“Seven centuries of stories reside within these stones”. That is the first thought that comes to mind when gazing upon Brankovića Kula. Let me tell you about this impressive tower. Brankovića Kula stands as a testament to Dubrovnik’s enduring strength and strategic importance.

The construction of Dubrovnik City Walls spanned from the 7th to the 17th century. Dubrovnik had some form of walls in the 7th century when the city was founded. The population’s safety required them during turbulent historical changes.

The design we see today was fixed around the fall of Constantinople in 1453. This period is referred to as the Golden Age of Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik citizens were skilled diplomats. They solved all their issues through diplomacy. They had an agreement with the Ottomans. This guaranteed free trade in return for an annual tribute.

Dubrovnik was also under constant peril from the Republic of Venice. Venice was Dubrovnik’s rival in sea and land trade. It wanted to hinder Dubrovnik’s development and seize its port. The port was an important strategic point for Venice. It was on the long sea route from Venice to the eastern Mediterranean.

Warfare evolved. Attackers laid siege to overcome defenses like high walls. They employed war machines such as cannons. The development of war machines enabled an ever-increasing reach of strong arrows and stones. In response the city walls grew higher.

Dubrovnik’s leaders decided to modernize the walls. They hired architects and building masters. Florentine builder Michelozzo Michelozzi left the biggest mark on Dubrovnik. Michelozzi added lower massive outer curtain walls to the existing old walls. This was typical for the Renaissance period.

Builders strengthened and doubled the width of the walls. They filled tower bases with earth and limestone. This prevented collapsing. This update resulted in lowering the towers and the city walls. Reconstructions added wide platforms along the walls and towers.

The city installed powerful artillery cannons on them. The city’s defense moved from the top of the walls to its base. Fortresses got casemates. They added cannon embrasures and parapets to the towers. Square towers transformed into strong round forts and bastions.

This stage coincides with the stylistic period of the Renaissance. Firearms appeared in Dubrovnik in 1351. The first cannons defended the city. In 1410 Dubrovnik established a cannon foundry.

The new extensions formed semicircular fortifications. Cannons were easy to use here. The old walls also retained their function. They added curtain walls on the land side. If the enemy broke through to the ramparts they would still face large original walls.

In this form the evolution of Dubrovnik City Walls reached its end in the 17th century. It remained unchanged until the fall of the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1808. Each fort has its own name. Most are named after saints. Some are named after their location.

The walls successfully maintained their main purpose. They prevented free entry into the city. Communication took place via drawbridges. It also happened through the city gates. The gates were closed in the evening. Nobody could enter or leave the city until morning.

The Republic of Dubrovnik did not have a standing army. They employed mercenaries for this purpose. They were not Dubrovnik locals. They mostly came from northern Croatia and Hungary. The cannons along the walls were always up-to-date and ready for use.

The walls of Dubrovnik are a fortification complex. We can find different defensive elements merged into a whole. The cityscape is dominated by main fortresses. There are also numerous smaller bastions and towers along the walls.

Brankovića Kula stands as a silent sentinel. It has witnessed centuries of Dubrovnik’s history. Its stones echo with tales of sieges and diplomacy. They also resonate with the spirit of a city that has always fiercely guarded its freedom. Take a moment to appreciate the enduring legacy of Brankovića Kula. It is more than just a tower. It is a symbol of Dubrovnik’s resilience.
